Dates: June 5 – 8, 2025

Tuition:  $1,895.00

Location: Monhegan Island, Maine

Instructors: Kurt Budliger & Benjamin Williamson

Overview:

We are incredibly excited to be teaming up again this year with acclaimed Maine photographer Benjamin Williamson for a wonderful weekend workshop on Monhegan Island.  Monhegan Island and it’s stunning beauty has been a mecca for artists for over a century. Monhegan is a small island, and the main photographic attractions include the Lighthouse Museum and view from the top, Fish Beach, Swim Beach, the Landing, Lobster Cove, Burnt Head, and Whitehead. The island is walkable from end to end on dirt roads, only work vehicles are allowed. Every home and cottage seems to have beautiful gardens, and June is a great time to see them in bloom.

Key Features:

  • Gain a strong technical foundation in outdoor photography

  • Learn the importance of “seeing the light”

  • Learn how to use filters

  • Photographic Composition and Design

  • Advanced field techniques

  • Photograph the quaint cottages and classic New England scenery of Monhegan Island

  • Photograph sunrise and sunsets along the stunning Maine coast

  • Learn best practices of image processing and bring your images to life using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop

  • Get individualized instruction and critique in the field as well as classroom

Schedule:

The workshop will kick off on Thursday evening with a group dinner at a location to be determined followed by our first sunset shoot. There is no “set” daily schedule, rather we keep things flexible in order to best respond to the weather and light available for making images.  Typically, we’ll be out for sunrise, shoot until mid morning and then take a break for a meal and brief rest.  We’ll reconvene for instruction, post processing and critique during the mid-day hours when the light is typically less conducive to photography.  We’ll then head back out into the field in the late afternoon and evening for a sunset shoot and the possibility of a night photography session as well.

Physical Difficulty:

This workshop requires a lot of walking since there are no vehicles on the island.  You should be comfortable walking several miles with all of your camera equipment.  We will be spending a lot of time shooting along country roads, beaches and coastal trails that will require scrambling over rocks and down hillsides.  The terrain along the coast can be very uneven and sometimes slippery so caution is always a prudent consideration.  Hiking boots and a modest level of health and fitness will greatly enhance your experience.

Travel & Accommodations:

Participants are responsible for their own lodging and transportation and.  We will provide the lodging information upon registration.  Participants will need to take a ferry to Monhegan Island.  Ferries depart daily from Boothbay, Port Clyde and New Harbor.
