Southern Maine Coast Photography Workshop
Southern Maine Coast Photography Workshop 2019
Dates: August 16-18, 2019
Location: Southern Maine
Instructor(s): Kurt Budliger & Benjamin Williamson
We are incredibly excited to be teaming up with acclaimed Maine photographer Benjamin Williamson and Down East Magazine for a series of 3 day workshops on the Maine Coast in 2019. From York to Scarborough, this area encompasses sections of Maine’s classic rocky coast along with photogenic lighthouses, working harbors, historic buildings, and beautiful sand beaches. We’ll determine the best locations on the day of the workshop based on our reading of the weather and conditions. Possible include Nubble Lighthouse, Marginal Way Ogunquit, Perkins Cove, Kennebunkport, Cape Porpoise, Biddeford Pool, Old Orchard Beach, Kettle Cove, Two Lights, Portland Head Light, and Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse.
- Gain a strong technical foundation in outdoor photography
- Learn the importance of “seeing the light”
- Learn how to use filters
- Photographic Composition and Design
- Advanced field techniques
- Photograph quaint fishing harbors, lighthouses and other classic New England scenes
- Photograph sunrise and sunsets along the stunning Maine coast
- Learn best practices of image processing and bring your images to life using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop
- Get individualized instruction and critique in the field as well as classroom
The workshop will kick off on Thursday evening with a group dinner at a location to be determined. We will officially begin the workshop bright and early on Friday August 16 with our first field session. There is no “set” daily schedule, rather we keep things flexible in order to best respond to the weather and light available for making images. Typically, we’ll be out for sunrise, shoot until mid morning and then take a break for a meal and brief rest. We’ll reconvene for instruction, post processing and critique during the mid-day hours when the light is typically less conducive to photography. We’ll then head back out into the field in the late afternoon and evening for a sunset shoot and the possibility of a night photography session as well.
There will be no strenuous hiking involved during the workshop and most locations will be close to the road. Some locations, however may involve a short hike of less than a mile with no serious elevation gains. We will be spending a lot of time shooting along country roads, beaches and coastal trails that will require scrambling over rocks and down hillsides. The terrain along the coast can be very uneven and sometimes slippery so caution is always a prudent consideration. Hiking boots and a modest level of health and fitness will greatly enhance your experience.
